JAZZ KISSA 2024 – A Photographic Collection of 30 Jazz Kissa Across Japan
A continuation of the beloved “Jazz Kissa 2014” Vol.1 and Vol.2, which introduced a total of 136 Jazz Kissa throughout Eastern Japan.
This is a pure photo book — there are no text articles included. The table of contents and the addresses of each location are provided in both Japanese and English.
From the afterword:
Many owners of Japan’s classic Jazz Kissa — cafés and bars dedicated to playing vinyl jazz records — first opened their doors during the genre’s golden era in the 1960s and 70s. Now in their 70s and 80s, more and more of these long-standing establishments are expected to close over the next five years.
Yet at the same time, there is a growing number of younger people stepping in to take over these iconic venues. Especially in recent years, it seems more and more young enthusiasts are eager to keep the spirit of the Jazz Kissa alive. While the golden age may not return in terms of scale or prosperity, the fear that Jazz Kissa will disappear entirely is fading.
In this 2024 edition, I’ve photographed 30 Jazz Kissa across Japan. Twelve of them have opened since 2015, and four have been taken over by new owners (including “EIGAKAN,” which will be operated by a new group from April this year).
Interestingly, only three of the featured cafés are located in Tokyo. Most international visitors tend to start their Jazz Kissa journey in the capital, often asking, “Which Jazz Kissa should I visit in Tokyo?”
But today, the true momentum of the Jazz Kissa scene seems to be happening outside of Tokyo — in the regions, where many old, character-rich cafés still thrive. These spots offer deep charm and satisfaction for any true Jazz Kissa fan.
Of course, Tokyo still boasts incredible venues worth visiting. But I hope this book will inspire more people to explore and appreciate the regional revival of Japan’s unique Jazz Kissa culture.
