◉CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS A JAZZ KISSA?
The roots of the jazz kissa culture, unique to Japan, can be traced back about 90 years. It is the story of jazz first spreading from the United States to the island nation of Japan in the Far East, and is like a mirror reflecting the relationship between the Japanese and jazz. This year, the Jazz Kissa "EAGLE" in Yotsuya, Tokyo, celebrates its 53rd anniversary. It is one of the few remaining "endangered" orthodox jazz kissa that still keeps up with current trends and exerts great influence today. We asked Masahiro Goto, the owner of the EAGLE and jazz critic who has published several books, to reflect on the last half century of the EAGLE's history and answer the question, "What is a jazz kissa?"
◉Chapter 2 : The story of EAGLE
Founded in 1967, EAGLE is a jazz kissa in Yotsuya, Tokyo, now in danger of extinction. Its predecessor was the legendary rock cafe DISK CHART, where Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Onuki's band SUGAR BABE, one of the forefathers of Japanese city pop, was formed. Based on the testimony of EAGLE owner Masahiro Goto and other people who knew that time, we present a never-before-told episode about Tokyo's music culture from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. And we have examined how that history influenced Jazz Kissa EAGLE.
